This is the story of a southern civil war officer and his life post civil war. He went from hero, to landless and eventually even resorted to robbery. He also became a buffalo hunter, scout and lawman. Finally, he ended up as a rancher. Through the book Custer and the 7th cavalry, including Joe Merchison, figure prominently. The book takes a lot of twists and turns, but each turn is as interesting as the last. Even such characters as Wild Bill Hickock and Bat Masterson play roles. Interesting and flowing, all anyone could want in a good read...shuProduct details

Adobe Walls edition by Robert Vaughan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
For a Star Award winner I expected more. Went thru 80% of the book before getting to the Adobe Walls battle. It was a very meager description of the battle. I also got the impression that the author was stringing together events just to get to the end of the book. And the inclusion of real life characters did not add to the story. Nor did the sex that was randomly placed. There were some high points. I did like the flashback approach. It was the reason I started the book. The author did bring the story together at the end.
ADOBE WALLS IS AN EXCELLENTLY WRITTEN WESTERN BOOK. IT IS NOT YOUR TYPICALLY WRITTEN "HOOK AND DRAW" WSTERN. BUT, NEVER THE LESS, IT IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK. MR. VAUGHAN DID A VERY GOOD JOB OF RESEARCH, CHARACTER DEVELOPEMENT, STORYLINE AND EXCITEMENT. HANK TYREEN AND RACHEL STEWART PLAY SOME UNUSUAL ROLLS AND THEIR CHARACTER IS ASTOUNDING. FULL OF SURPRISES AND MAKES YOU WONDER WHAT WILL HAPEN NEXT. I DO HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ALL "WESTERN FICTION" BOOK LOVERS. IT IS A VERY GOOD READ. I DIDN'T WANT TO PUT THE BOOK DOWN, UNTIL I FINISHED IT. HAPPY READING.
Confederate Officer Hank Dawson comes home from the war to find his family dead and his girl married. He then drifts west and with the skill set learned in the civil war tries his hand as an outlaw, gambler, scout for Custer's 7th Calvary, law man, buffalo hunter and Indian fighter. The action never stops in this western adventure. And true to the classic western style, the good guy get's the girl in the end.
I enjoyed the book. It was adventure with enough character description to be believable. I was saddened by the story in one way, as it painted the Native Americans as seen mostly by whites as terrible people. Myself being Native American, felt that it might have been shown in a more equal way. I do accept that it was probably right on in depicting the rough life of the buffalo hunters, the saloon girls, etc. The ending was just a little too pat, after reading about blood and guts all the way through, like okay now, let's just end it all neat and proper.
And they all lived happily ever after. That is the reason I gave it only 4 stars instead of five. But it is a good read,
Western fiction fans will love Robert Vaughn's Adobe Walls protagonist Major Hank Dawson evolves from a Major in the Confederate Army to outlaw, Indian scout, sheriff, buffalo hunter, Indian fighter and finally rancher. I loved the ending. 5 Stars
This is my third read of books in Vaughan's US Cavalry series. This one seems to kick off the series and some of the same fictional characters are also in his later novels. These books are written as an ode to the cavalry of the Indian wars, which in books written since the 1970's are depicted as largely incompetent drunks, with the American Indians portrayed as strictly noble. These books are more of a throwback to earlier books, when the cavalry were the "good guys". Interesting mix of characters. Sometimes a little confusing, as although some books in this series cover the same historic battles, they may have the same characters in different roles, in different battles. Example one of his favorite characters is Lt Joe Murchison, who may be a patrol leader in one book and a company commander in another book, both roles at the same battle. So, some lack of continuity. Entertaining though and well researched.
This is a story of a young soldier returning home after serving in the Confederate army for four years and finding that everything he has fought for is gone. His family is dead, his girl has married another and the family farm has been taken by the government for back taxes. After wandering aimlessly around,
working enough only to keep moving, Hank finally finds a new dream. This is a novel of growth and redemption that could only take place on the frontier. I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys the romance and vitality of the West.
